TO ALL MEMBERS OF THE COMMISSION AND THE SCIENTIFIC COMMITTEE
At the request of the Republic of Korea, I am circulating the report from the ‘Workshop on the Capacity Building of Developing States: Improvements in Fisheries Data Management’ which was held in Seoul in June 2012. The workshop was coordinated by Ms Hyunwook Kwon (Commission Representative) and funded by the Korean Ministry for Food, Agriculture, Forestry and Fisheries. Eleven invited speakers from RFMOs and national and multilateral organisations, including the CCAMLR Data Manager, discussed focus topics and presented cases studies. Approximately 60 fishery scientists and managers from 30 countries participated in the workshop.
The workshop concluded, inter alia, that:
- the types of data required for fisheries research and management were generally well documented
- the development and implementation of data collection programs remains a key challenge and limiting step in many fisheries
- the fishing industry has played an essential role in facilitating data collection in many fisheries and it is hoped that this role may be extended to cover all fisheries.
